What is a Vehicle Safety Check?

A vehicle safety check is a thorough look at your car’s key safety features to confirm everything is working as it should. Here’s why regular safety checks matter for every driver:

  • Peace of mind
  • Prevent accidents & breakdowns
  • Avoid a major repair or potential accident
  • Stay road legal

In short, a vehicle safety check is a proactive step to make sure your car is safe, reliable, and compliant. Better to be safe than sorry on the road.

What’s Included in Midas’ 5-Point Safety Check?

At Midas, we focus on five essential areas in our safety inspection, covering the everyday things that keep your car running safely. Our 5-point vehicle safety check includes:

1. Battery Check

Your car’s battery is its heartbeat, if it’s weak or faulty, you’re not going anywhere! In the battery check, our mechanics test your battery’s overall performance and health. We’ll make sure it is holding charge properly and that the terminals and connections are clean and secure. If we find your battery is struggling, we can advise on a replacement from our range of quality car batteries to keep you moving.

(Fun fact: nearly half of roadside breakdowns are due to battery failure, so this check alone is worth it!)

2. Fluid Levels

Think of fluids as your car’s lifeblood. Engines and braking systems rely on proper fluid levels to work safely and efficiently. As part of the safety check, we inspect engine oil, coolant (antifreeze), brake fluid, and more, to ensure none are low or dirty. Proper fluid levels prevent excess engine wear and ensure safe braking performance. Keeping fluids in check is a simple way to avoid breakdowns and keep all the moving parts of your car happy.

3. Wiper Blades

Clear vision is non-negotiable for safe driving. If your windshield wipers are old, cracked, or not doing their job, driving in rain (or even a dusty windscreen) can be downright dangerous. During the safety check, we examine your wiper blades for any signs of wear and test that the wipers and washers are working properly.

4. Lights Check

Being able to see and be seen is crucial, especially at night or in bad weather. Our mechanics will do full lights check, making sure all your car’s external lights are functioning. This includes headlights (both low and high beam), taillights, brake lights, indicators, hazards, and even reverse lights. We’ll replace any faulty bulbs or advise if a fixture needs repair.

5. Tyre Check

Your tyres are literally where the rubber meets the road, they affect handling, braking, and overall safety. In the tyre check, we inspect tread depth, tyre condition, and pressure on all four tyres (and the spare, if you have one). Sufficient tread depth is vital for grip, especially in wet conditions; if your tyres are worn down too much (the legal minimum tread in Australia is about 1.5mm), your car will take longer to stop and could skid easily. We’ll let you know if your tread is getting low or if we spot any cuts, bulges, or uneven wear. We also adjust tyre pressures as needed, because incorrect pressure can cause poor fuel economy and affect handling.

When Should You Get a Safety Check?

Many drivers think you only need an inspection when something’s obviously wrong, but in truth, regular preventive checks can save you from trouble before it starts. Here are some smart times to book a safety check:

  • Before a long road trip
  • Periodically (e.g. every 6-12 months)
  • After long storage or unusual conditions
  • Whenever something feels “off”

The bottom line: don’t wait for a warning light or a failed inspection to take action. Regular safety checks keep you ahead of the curve, ensuring your vehicle is roadworthy and safe year-round.

Vehicle Safety Check FAQs

How often should I get a vehicle safety check?

For most drivers, we recommend a safety check at least once a year. Regular annual inspections (or at every essential service) help catch wear and tear before it becomes a problem. However, the frequency can depend on how you use your car. If you drive high mileage, frequently tow heavy loads, or often travel in challenging conditions, more frequent checks (say every 6 months) might be wise. Also consider timing a safety check before major events, a long holiday road trip or when your car’s registration renewal is coming up.

How long does a vehicle safety check take?

Midas’s 5-point vehicle safety check is a quick and easy process. In many cases, we can complete the inspection in around 10 to 15 minutes, while you wait. It might take a touch longer if we’re busy or if your vehicle has accessibility challenges, but generally it’s a very swift service.

What happens if my car fails the safety check?

First, it’s important to note that the Midas 5-point safety check isn’t a formal pass/fail test like the government roadworthy or pink slip inspection. It’s an advisory check for your peace of mind, so there’s technically no “fail” and we won’t slap a rejection sticker on your car or anything like that! Instead, we’ll give you a report of our findings. If everything looks good, great, you get a thumbs up and can drive away confidently. If we do find any issues (say, a headlight out, dangerously thin tyres, or a battery that’s struggling), we’ll explain them to you and let you know what can be done. There’s no obligation to fix anything on the spot, but our team will happily provide a quote or perform any repairs/replacements you approve.
