What does it mean when your ABS warning light turns on?

ABS stands for Anti-locking Braking System. This system is designed to help keep the car from skidding out of control if extreme pressure is applied suddenly, or when braking in slippery conditions. When engaged, this system will minimize the chances of all four wheels locking up. The car can still be driven, but at your own risk. Although the brakes will function normally, without the benefit of this system it becomes the drivers responsibility to control any tendency for the wheels to lock up.

If your ABS light turns on during normal driving, chances are the system is malfunctioning and this should be evaluated by a mechanic sooner rather than later. Some vehicles have the option of turning the ABS off, in which case the light will remain illuminated. If you have not disengaged the system, visit your local service centre as soon as possible.
