The difference between a quote and an estimate

In the world of mechanics this is usually an area that causes a lot of heartache for both the consumer and the provider. It is important to understand the difference between these, as clearing this up with your mechanic in the early stages of repairs will save you dollars down the track. If your mechanic has given you an estimate, that all it is.

He is taking an educated guess at what the repairs may be. Estimates are usually followed up with written quotes. If you have received an estimate and no written quote, speak to your mechanic about obtaining one. You have every right as a consumer to know how much money you are about to spend. If your mechanic seems reluctant to do so, there could be a shady reason for this. Bear in mind though, not all repairs are straightforward and in some cases unforeseen work arises. With open and friendly communication between you and your mechanic, you should avoid any nasty surprises.
